My name is Jenny, and I am an over-packer. Truthfully, I’m not proud of that. I envy travelers who can survive a three-week trip with a backpack. I would need a checked bag, a carry-on, and a backpack for that trip.

As many useless things as I squeeze into my luggage on every trip, a couple of crucial items make sense. These essentials should be in every traveler’s (solo or otherwise) carry-on. Here is my list:

  1. A wedge door stop security alarm: As a solo female traveler who exclusively uses Airbnb for my travels, this tool is a vital part of my stays. You simply switch it on and wedge it under the main door, and the slightest effort to open the door will result in the most obnoxious sound you’ve ever heard. Just make sure you move it before you open the door from the inside because, like I said, the sound is REALLY obnoxious. Please note these devices usually require a 1x9V battery.
  2. A portable carbon monoxide detector: Carbon monoxide is colorless, tasteless, and odorless. If an accommodation does not include a detector, guests cannot detect the poisonous gas. I HIGHLY recommend every traveler invest in one—especially those who travel internationally, as many countries abroad do not require one as part of their building codes.
  3. Anti-theft bag: This one is self-explanatory, but I’ll explain anyway. As fun as traveling can be, it does come with some risks. Even the most vigilant travelers can be victims of pickpocketing. An anti-theft bag is just another way to be proactive against theft.
  4. A portable door lock: This is another way to prevent the door from being opened from the outside. I own one of these, but I have never figured out how to use it properly. Still, I’ve heard great reviews about them, so it’s worth mentioning.
  5. Honorable mention—an international phone plan: I spent my most recent birthday in the most breathtaking cabin in San Marcos, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. The host described a “10-minute nature walk” from town; it turned out to be a 20-25 minute cliff hike. On my way down, I panicked when I couldn’t recognize the path. But I still had phone service to contact the host for directions. That moment was all the confirmation I needed that my international phone plan was worth it.
